We recently had the pleasure of sitting down for a Boast About it Interview with Xavier Auserman, a truly dedicated member of the Open Squash community. Xavier's story is one of transformation, driven by a passion for squash and now, an exciting new venture into the world of chocolate. His journey from Ecuador to the United States, intertwined with his evolving relationship with squash, is both inspiring and captivating.

From "Pure Chaos" to 600+ Hours of Court Time

Xavier's introduction to squash was anything but conventional. "I didn't grow up playing any sports. I was more into technology and playing video games," he said. When he and his wife first tried their hand at squash, it was, in his words, "very chaotic." They initially played racquetball inside a squash court, using racquetball rackets. "It's fine if you don't know what you're doing," he said. "It's just pure chaos."

However, Xavier's competitive nature quickly ignited. A loss at Squash Rx became a turning point. "I don't like losing," he said. This spurred him to take lessons and join clinics at Open Squash, where he discovered both excellent coaching and a welcoming community. "From there, my journey started," he said. Now, he has booked over 600 hours of court time at Open Squash and has improved his ranking significantly. "I was rated 2.9 when I started playing which is very, very low. Yeah. And now I'm 4.3. I know that I am a little underrated. I should be around 4.5."

For Xavier, squash has become much more than just a sport; it's a crucial element of his well-being. "Squash is a fundamental pillar in my life at this point," he said. "It helps with stress, with my anxiety. It helps me socializing, helps me create friendships. Community. Yeah. So, squash is a way for me not only to be competitive in having a great workout, but also have a great community."

He emphasizes the positive impact squash has on his mental state. "The fact that you get to hit the ball and move around calms you down a lot and helps with sleeping. It helps with emotions. It makes you calmer. Like a better version of yourself," he said.

In addition to his dedication to squash, Xavier is embarking on an exciting new chapter: creating his own chocolate company. He recently left his job to pursue the dream full-time. "I want to have my own little company bringing chocolate from Ecuador and having my own brand," he said.

Xavier's father, who has extensive experience working with cacao farmers and refineries in Ecuador, will be a vital partner in the venture. "He's the one that is that knows the industry better than I do," Xavier said. They plan to import high-quality Ecuadorian chocolate to the United States and sell it online. When asked what the squash community can do for him, his answer is simple and direct: "Eat my chocolate."

Well, if you’re going to twist our arms, Xavier…
